What is Reiki?

Reiki is a precise, ancient Tibetan system of healing, harmonizing and balancing energy. It was rediscovered in the late 1800’s by a Japanese man, Dr. Mikao Usui, and brought to this country by a Hawaiian woman, Hawayo Takata.
Reiki works on many levels, including the physical, mental, emotional, spiritual and karmic. Reiki reveals the innate gift of healing which is our birthright. It reveals the body’s innate intelligence to heal itself, bringing the body into harmony by relieving physical and emotional blockages. Reiki helps to heal the body and the mind. It helps the body return to its own perfection, whatever that might be, by healing the cause and eliminating the effect. It is deeply relaxing.
One of the translations of the word Reiki is “universal life energy”. The universal life energy of Reiki possesses wisdom of its own. The Reiki energy cannot be manipulated. It is attracted to wherever imbalances exist.
Reiki is not learned with the conscious mind. The ability to flow the Reiki energy is acquired through an initiation into a specific lineage of healing energy handed down through Reiki Masters, which began with Dr. Mikao Usui. This initiation, also called an ‘attunement’, aligns the electromagnetic field of the body with the Reiki energy. Anyone, regardless of age or mental abilities, can be attuned to the Reiki energy. It is easily learned, easily used, and extremely effective. It has been used to treat everything from minor ailments and accidents to chronic disease. Reiki has been successfully used alone and in conjunction with other holistic modalities.
There are 3 levels, or degrees of Reiki. The First Degree initiation gives a person the ability to treat themselves and others. The Second Degree builds on the foundation of First Degree. Second Degree gives you more access to the Reiki energy and enables you to treat both hands-on and at a distance. Master Level or Third Degree Reiki is for those who are deeply spiritual and dedicated to service to Reiki, and for those dedicated to teaching Reiki.                                                                                                                                   Reiki is not a religion and is compatible with most beliefs.
True Usui Lineage Reiki

When the character or symbol of the word “Reiki” is translated, one of the possible meanings could be “spiritual energy.” There is an abundance of spiritual energy in the Universe. Many healers accessing other types of spiritual energy call it “Reiki,” but it is not true Reiki. To clear up any confusion, Reiki is not a technique. It is an initiation into a specific healing energy lineage that began with Dr. Mikao Usui. Only Masters who are in the direct lineage are initiating students into the true Reiki energy current. It is recommended that you research your perspective Master’s lineage to ensure that it is true Reiki, if that is what you want.
How does it work?

The reiki therapist begins by placing her hands gently on the patient in positions that are comfortable for the individual. The therapist acts as a transmitter of universal life energy, receiving energy from the environment and channeling it to the patient. The energy is self-directed; it automatically flows to the area of the body most in need.

What to expect?
The reiki therapist can spend 30 minutes or more with each patient. It does not require any verbal exchange and the patient often falls asleep. Each reiki experience is unique and individual.
